Best Photo App - Google Photos Geotagging Review

It has to be said that we love Google Photos. We’ve been using the app to store our travel photos for years now as there is unlimited storage. We typically take 2,000 photos over a couple of weeks and that soon adds up from a storage perspective, so the unlimited storage is excellent.

However, there are some limitations, as photos are compressed to save space. If a photo is larger than 16 MP, it will be resized to 16 MP. If you are unlikely to want to print your photos larger than 24 inches x 16 inches then you probably won’t notice the difference. Videos higher than 1080p will be resized to high-definition 1080p. Typically we view our photos on a mobile phone or laptop and these size restrictions are not noticeable.

The feature we love the most is the ability to view photos by location and see them on a map. In recent months Google has added a great “heat map” feature to their maps to show where you have the highest concentration of photos. To get the most out of this feature you need to have a GPS enabled camera, or use your mobile phone.

To access your photos by map you need to use the mobile app (the maps feature doesn’t seem to be available on the desktop version). Just select “Search”, then “Places” and you will see a map with some heat spots on it. You can now navigate the map and select places to see the photos tagged to those locations. It’s like magic!

Here’s our recent trip to Portugal in Google Photos:

With the amazing location tagging and features of Google Photos we have the ability to dip into our travel history and pull out memories from locations at will.

Wonderful.
